Amendments proposed to paragraph 8.53/CS4 to add reference to the Area of Archaeological Importance; see scanned comment for full text. Policy CS4 should include the following information: 1.As the Borough Council's archaeological advisor, the County archaeology service will provide comments on each site allocated for development regarding its potential to be the location for significant archaeological assets, and the likely assessment/recording requirements arising. 2.Although the Policies Maps with the Site Allocations DPD define the Area of Archaeological Importance, it is not clear from CS4 how the area is to be used. The Archaeology Service can provide appropriate policy text.

Paragraph 8.53 should be amended to recognise that not all heritage assets are designated and should read: 'Proposals affecting designated and non-designated Ipswich heritage assets should be informed by the Historic Environment Record for Suffolk maintained by the County Council...' Further explanation of why the area of archaeological importance has been designated could be set out. Features in this area have been internationally recognised and the town's long history, particularly maritime, is important for sustaining the town's identity as well as marketing the town to visitors and businesses.
